Training is an essential part of raising a happy, well-rounded Border Collie. These highly intelligent and energetic dogs thrive when given clear guidance, structure, and plenty of opportunities to learn and engage. While I don’t formally endorse any of the following organizations (and critical thinking on your part is still required), I’ve compiled a list of training resources covering everything from basic obedience to specialized activities. Whether you’re new to training or a seasoned handler, these links may provide valuable tools and insights to build a strong partnership with your dog!

The field of dog training is currently unregulated, this means that anyone despite their level of experience or knowledge can label themselves as a dog trainer and charge for their services. Though dog training is in fact a science, there are no continuing education requirements, and no universally accepted theories. Dogs do not have voices to tell us what their experiences are like, good or bad. For that reason I think it is our responsibility as owners and handlers to think critically about the advice we take and the trainers we support with our business. When searching for a trainer or class you might ask yourself what credentials the trainer holds, what their education in dogs looked like, what breeds they most often work with, and if they are a sport trainer, whether they have had objective success with dogs they have trained in that sport.
